Spring 2014 in the Healing Herb Garden!

This spring we partnered with New York Cares to host four garden workdays with local high school students!

2014 is our second year partnering with New York Cares Youth Service Program and the Culinary Club from Academy of Hospitality and Tourism at Erasmus Campus. We had a great time working in the garden from February through May, with each monthly workday dedicated to a specific task for the year’s growing season: planting new herb seedlings, turning compost, preparing the garden beds, and spreading a nice fragrant layer of mulch!

Sustainable Flatbush’s Urban Farm & Garden Director Sheryll Durrant has created a gardening program for youth interns, service learning groups, and school clubs, using our Healing Herb Garden as an outdoor classroom. This summer we will welcome interns from Exalt Youth, apprentices from Sacred Vibes Apothecary, and volunteers from the community, to join us in growing a variety of medicinal and culinary herbs.

The program covers a range of urban agriculture techniques, including:

  • propagation
  • transplanting
  • crop management
  • carpentry
  • composting
  • soil remediation
  • garden design
  • rainwater harvesting

Come join us in the garden!
