One key component of any sustainable system is a closed loop cycle. In nature, there is no waste–all byproducts are recycled through systems to feed another part of the overall system.

The Project LeafDrop that Sustainable Flatbush has held the past two Saturdays (November 6th and 13th) has been a great success! Thanks to all who participated, whether it was by volunteering or by contributing leaves, any help is much appreciated!

As we did last year, Sustainable Flatbush will be participating in Project LeafDrop, holding two opportunities for Flatbush community members to get rid of any pesky leaves that have been cluttering up their lawns this fall.

As part of 350.org’s 10/10/10 Global Work Party campaign to fight climate change, Sustainable Flatbush hosted an event in partnership with the Flatbush Reformed Church, the Brooklyn Food Coalition, and the Flatbush Farm Share CSA to clean up our new garden space at 890 Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, New York.

On Monday, June 7th I had the opportunity to attend the monthly meeting of Brooklyn’s Solid Waste Advisory Board (SWAB) at Borough Hall. When Anne sent me an email asking if I could go, she joked about how it would be more interesting than I think. Of course, she was right!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Brooklyn Center of the Performing Arts Earth Day celebration on April 11th! The event was so crowded and energized, it was a great way to kick off the Earth Day festivities going on all spring!

Books, Coffee, Democracy, and Sustainable Decorations at Vox Pop Cafe! While we were getting ready for our second annual Greening Flatbush: Garden Where You Are Event, we had to decide what would make our space look like Sustainable Flatbush was coming through without creating a lot of waste.

This month Flatbush residents will have two local opportunities to keep their autumn leaves out of the landfill!
