The Cortelyou Greenmarket has been getting bigger and better every year; this season will be the longest yet. Here’s the news from 2009 Market Manager Alison Whaley:

Cortelyou Greenmarket Returns on Sunday, May 3rd!

Thanks to popular demand, the Cortelyou Greenmarket is back for its sixth year! Every Sunday, May through December, this market provides the diverse Cortelyou community with a bounty of fresh picked fruits and vegetables, beautiful plants and flowers, grass-fed meat and dairy products, wild-caught fish, amazing eggs, and delicious baked goods. We are also planning fun, free events such as cooking demonstrations, raffles, and kids & family friendly activities all season long. Come talk to the farmers who grow your food, meet your neighbors, bring a friend, and taste the difference at your neighborhood Greenmarket!

The Cortelyou Greenmarket is located at Cortelyou Road and Rugby Road, and is open from 8am – 4pm every Sunday, May through December.

*EBT/Food Stamps (June ? November) and WIC & Senior Farmers Market Nutrition checks are accepted

Greenmarket is a 501(c)(3) non-profit Program of the Council on the Environment of New York City. Greenmarket’s mission is to promote regional agriculture by connecting local farmers with city residents ensuring that all New Yorkers have access to locally grown, foraged, caught and baked products. Shopping at Greenmarket is not only good for you, it’s good for regional economies and helps to preserves farmland, support clean water and soil, encourage food security and diversity, and contributes to neighborhood revitalization by providing a safe and fun community gathering place.

East New York Farms! is a community-based program that brings together neighborhood gardeners, local entrepreneurs, youth leaders, and regional farmers to create a vibrant public market in East New York, Brooklyn. The ENY Farmers’ Market is the oldest of a growing number of markets in NYC that work closely with community gardeners as micro-entrepreneurs.

The project also engages 24 local youth in its Urban Agriculture Internship. Youth cultivate their own ½ urban farm, assist local market gardeners, and partner with adults in the community to run a seasonal farmers’ market. Since 1998 our market has generated over $630,000 of income for local gardeners and vendors and regional family farmers. More than 50 local gardeners have grown over 60,000 pounds of fresh organic food right in East New York. Over 80 young people have participated in paid internships offering agricultural training, leadership development, and social justice education.

Over the years the market has expanded its role in the East New York community. Beginning as a source of fresh produce, it has grown to be a center for education, collaboration, and neighborhood pride.

The ENY Farmers’ Market will celebrate its 10th Anniversary with a street fair on New Lots Avenue, between Hendrix and Jerome Streets, on Saturday September 20th, 9 am – 5pm.

The Anniversary Celebration will feature live performances by local groups including Lyrical Artist, the Gowanus Wildcats, Non-P and other artists with the Elevation 2 New Heights label. Other attractions like free ice cream from Ronnybrook Dairy Farm, face painting, a cooking contest (with prizes!), a storytelling and crafts station, health screenings, and raffles & giveaways will make for a full day of fun for the whole family.

Help celebrate 10 years of community-led change. Stop by on Saturday September 20th, or any Saturday through November 15 at New Lots and Schenck. Regular market hours are 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Last Sunday was the season opener for the Cortelyou Road Greenmarket, and it was a very festive occasion! Kids and parents crowded the playground, a klezmer band played, and the market manager cooked up apple-rutabaga compote while conducting a color-coded survey about what additional products people would like to see at the market. It already looks like there will be a greater variety of vendors than in past years, and starting this weekend Brooklyn Compost Project will conduct worm composting demonstrations.
