The Time for Lunch Campaign is a project of Slow Food USA, an educational non-profit with the goal of creating a world in which everyone can enjoy food that is good, clean and fair. The purpose of Time for Lunch is to bring focus to the upcoming Congressional review of Child Nutrition Act, which governs the national school lunch program. As part of the campaign, people are holding EAT-INs at schools across the nation on or about Labor Day, Sept 7. This is basically a community potluck of fresh, fantastic, REAL food.

Sunday September 6th, 2-5pm, at Campus Road Garden
Campus Road Garden has combined their event with a roving potluck series at Brooklyn community gardens, taking place on SUNDAYs, from 2 til 5pm, throughout the month of September. See our calendar for more information! Campus Road Community Garden is located at the intersection of Campus Road and Avenue H.

Monday September 7th, 12-3pm, at P.S. 217
P.S. 217’s event is being organized by their Parents’ Association, with Sustainable Flatbush supporting. The P.S. 217 schoolyard is located at the corner of Coney Island and Newkirk Avenues.
Bring a dish to share – and a picnic blanket and/or beach chairs! The more, the merrier! Bring the entire family, friends, and neighbors! No need to register, just show up!

After enjoying a delicious meal, we got a tour of our host(ess) Micki Josi’s backyard compost bins and a chance to aerate their contents with a compost crank. (Although there were several graduates of the Brooklyn Compost Project’s Master Composter course present, most of us were amateurs.) Then we came indoors to “harvest” the worm bin by separating the compost from the worms and replenishing the bin with food scraps and newspaper. Since this task normally takes several hours and we had enough people to complete it much more quickly, this worked out well for everyone. Some of us went home with leftovers, compost, and even worms to start our own bins!

Washington, DC based non-profit organization Food & Water Watch is launching a campaign to get rBGH-free (artificial hormone free) and organic milk into the National School Lunch Program. The current information on health effects due to rBGH milk is too little. The milk options available to school children are too few. We’re working to develop legislative advocates that will put language into the 2009 Child Nutrition Reauthorization, allowing public schools the option to specify rBGH free milk in their food bids.

We need your help. Will you sign on to our Organizational Coalition Letter to Congress, asking Members of Congress to clarify schools ability to purchase rBGH-Free and Organic Milk? This letter will go to the Education and Labor Committee in the House, a committee in which New York’s 11th District Congressman Yvette Clark participates. The letter will also be sent to the Senate Agriculture committee.
