Buy Nothing Day Potluck: the tradition continues!

Buy Nothing Day Potluck: the tradition continues!

Some years ago we began hosting a potluck dinner on the day after Thanksgiving to celebrate Buy Nothing Day – known to most as Black Friday, the year’s biggest shopping event.

We wanted to create an alternative for those who don’t relate to the manic consumerism promoted in mainstream media, who would prefer to share a meal with old and new friends and build community.

All Souls Bethlehem Church has provided a home for our Buy Nothing Day potluck in the past and we are happy to announce that they will continue the much-loved tradition we started here in Flatbush. Everyone is welcome, just bring some food or drink to share. Hope to see you there!

(it’s a church in a house! look for the banner on the porch)

* We are also very excited to see some retailers, notably outdoor equipment supplier (and consumer-owned cooperative) REI, closing their doors on Black Friday and giving employees the day off. REI’S #optoutside campaign encourages everyone to get outdoors instead of shopping, and we plan to do just that. Check in with our Facebook page, where we’ll be inviting you to join us for a walk in the neighborhood (likely Prospect Park).
