Between sustainability programs that are promoted by City government or by citywide advocacy groups, and the countless neighborhood civic associations that have large networks but no explicit environmental agenda, is a terrain full of rich opportunities for creative collaboration.  Anne Pope and Sustainable Flatbush are one of the City’s leading examples of neighborhood focused sustainability advocacy.  I would encourage neighborhood groups everywhere in the City to seek inspiration for their own green efforts from Sustainable Flatbush.

Sustainable Flatbush is doing exactly what’s necessary to gain electoral support for the big societal changes. That is, they engage people at a community level–the level people can grasp–which translates into voters supporting energy and climate innovation.

Sustainable Flatbush is a galvanizing force for progressive environmental change and awareness in Flatbush. Brooklyn Food Coalition’s Flatbush branch has worked closely with Sustainable Flatbush on developing shared projects, including educational events and saving the Campus Road Community Garden on the Brooklyn College campus.  Students at Brooklyn College also see Sustainable Flatbush as a way to enter community-based work.  Bravo to Sustainable Flatbush.

As an area resident and director of a BC program that teaches NYC public HS students about sustainability, I am fortunate to have a relationship with Sustainable Flatbush that has exposed my students to what “ordinary” people can do to make their communities better places and given them opportunities to intern in a dynamic and progressive environment.
